Congratulations to Simon Gunnis (The Australian – Handicap 11) who won the 2025 Australian Medal. A full field of 96 players from The Australian GC, New South Wales GC, The Lakes GC & Royal Sydney GC commenced round 1 on Saturday morning in pristine conditions.
Maxime Boucoiran (Royal Sydney – Handicap 6) lead after round 1 with a net score of 70 strokes, matching past champion, Ray Balcomb (The Australian – Handicap 5) who withdrew after the round with injury.
Special congratulations to Jae Kim (The Lakes GC) & Alex Bosansky (The Lakes GC) who each recorded a hole-in-one on the 4th & 11th respectively during round 1.
The top 60 available players by net score qualified for round 2 on the Sunday. The players were greeted on a warm summer day with light northerly winds.
Simon backed up his fine round 1 score with another 71 strokes to finish 2-under par, 142 strokes for 36-holes. Despite a shaky start and finish to bookend his second round, he showed some brilliance and was good enough to win the event by 1-stroke ahead of John Formosa (The Australian – Handicap 13) with rounds of 73 & 70 which was the lowest score of all players in round 2.
A birdie on hole 12 and hole 16 of round 2 was the highlight for the champion, Simon Gunnis.
Daniel Young (The Australian – Handicap 13) from The Australian GC made it a trifecta for the host Club, claiming the 3rd place prize with rounds of 72 & 73 for a 145 stroke total.
Congratulations to Zac Mullins (New South Wales GC) who won the scratch convincingly with rounds of 74 & 70 from the blue tees, winning by 7-strokes from James Rayner (The Lakes GC).
