On Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 of January The 2017 Australian Medal was contested. 96 players from The Australian GC, The Lakes GC, Royal Sydney GC and New South Wales GC teed-off on round 1 attempting to make the top 60 and progress to round 2 on Sunday. Conditions were ideal for low scoring with heavy humidity and no wind. Tony Hoy (The Australian) and Alexander Harris (Royal Sydney) posted nett 69 strokes to be joint leaders after round 1 followed by James Brownlow (The Australian), Nick Happell (The Lakes) and Mitchell Finnegan (New South Wales) with scores of nett 70. The cut was made at 78 strokes nett (on a countback). James Brownlow and Stephen Carroll (The Australian) lead the scratch division, each with with 2-under par rounds of 70.

During round 2 Alexander Harris continued his fine form with a nett 72 for a total of 141 nett strokes. However, Jeffrey Williams (The Australian) signed for the lowest score of the weekend with a nett 68 strokes on the final day to finish 141 nett strokes total and winning the event on a count-back. Mitchell Finnegan’s second round nett 72 secured 3rd place outright. Stephen Carroll was the scratch winner with a two-round total of 143 strokes gross (-1), defending his title from 2016 and winning by 2 strokes from James Brownlow (The Australian).
