On Tuesday, 11 May 2021 The Australian Senior Medal was contested by 96 players over the age of 55 years. After a two year hiatus due to COVID19, the event returned to The Australian for 2021 and attracted over 170 entries. A ballot was necessary to determine the final field and players with a handicap above GA 3.7 (excluding AGC Members) were balloted out, setting up the strongest field in the events history. The event is also run in conjunction with the NSW Senior Classic along with The Lakes Senior Medal (Monday) and The Avondale Senior Medal (Wednesday) with points available for the Golf NSW Senior Order of Merit & Golf Australia Senior Order of Merit.
Congratulations to John Fearnley (Dunheved GC) who won the medal with a fine round of 73-strokes (+1). John edged out Stephen Valentine (Kew GC) who recorded 74 strokes to improve on his 3rd place finish in 2019. After starting with a bogie, John made amends with back-to-back birdies on holes 2 & 3. Another birdie on the difficult 10th hole put John at 2-under the card. Bogies were recorded on 11, 15 & 16 with John struggling from the bunkers. However, a solid par-par finish was good enough to take the win on a difficult day of scoring.
The net result was won by AGC Captain, Simon Farr-Jones (handicap 8) who signed for 68-strokes net to pocket the $270 Golf Shop voucher. The runner-up was Geoff Everett (handicap 12 – The Australian) who broke his age with an 84 stroke total for 72 net. The 65yrs + divison was won by Roy Vandersluis (The Lakes) to claim back-to-back titles in this category. Roy shot 78 with a solid back nine to edge out Rob Pedersen (Castle Hill G&CC) by count-back.
Congratulations to all the winners on the day.
